Question: Do you have some suggestions as to how to mitigate bias in my organization's decision making?

Answer: Some suggestions would be to provide data to your managers so they can understand the cumulative effect of their decisions. Another might be to help employees take charge of their careers by providing them with guidance as to what they need to accomplish in five or ten years depending on their career objectives within the organization.  You can even identify hidden decision makers by ensuring those individuals receive some specific management training.  Also assess if employees have equal access to the most important skills, knowledge and experiences to be eligible to achieve pay raises, promotions and/or exceed performance criteria. Don't forget, employees themselves offer useful information so you might want to consider even developing some focus groups. Let's not forget too that sometimes HR needs to offer training and development to all employees instead of just relying on managers to offer it informally.   Addressing bias in the workplace is like addressing any other business challenge. It needs good accurate data, engagement at the ground level and creative problem solving. In the long run, by identifying vulnerable decision points in your HR and management processes you can assist all employees to achieve their full potential.

CRHRA is partnering with Bishop House Consulting to bring the firm's highly regarded people leadership training program to our members who are HR managers.  The program - #Leadwell - Building Leaders for Tomorrow - is grounded in the conviction that effective and impactful people leaders require insight into their personal leadership style.  Development of that style – in addition to learning and adapting key leadership and management behaviors – ensures that leaders are leading well today and into the future.

The training program content covers the foundations of people leadership with participants learning how to:

• Clarify the role they play as manager and leader
• Improve management communications
• Build mature relationships with employees and peers
• Practice coaching skills for improving performance
• Lead and motivate their team in today’s hybrid work environments
  

Format of Program: There are 8 virtual modules in the #Leadwell program and 5 individual coaching sessions
